Ivie’s 2017 Internship Program officially launched last week. Throughout the summer, our interns will receive hands-on experience by contributing to a variety of projects. Following their first week on the job, two of our interns who are also longtime friends, Kaylin Davis and Elizabeth Quinn, worked together to share their thoughts on workplace friendships in celebration of National Best Friends Day.

Whether it’s asking for a helping hand or needing someone to eat lunch with, an office bestie can relieve some of the tension and often stress that can occur in the workplace.

According to Gallup, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Minnesota, workers are more enthusiastic and satisfied with their jobs when they have friendships with their co-workers. Loyalty to a company also increases while sick days decrease.

The friendly competition between best friends allows you to not only work hard and remain engaged throughout the day but also have someone to get dinner or do an activity with after work. Having a best friend in the workplace makes coming into work something to look forward to, and it’s nice knowing there will be someone there to help you out when you need it most.

To find your office bestie, start by finding someone you have a few things in common with or someone you sit next to throughout the day. Eliminate barriers by blossoming a friendship through conversation, lunch or a common project. You may quickly discover that you don’t agree on everything or that you may have some different interests, but don’t let that discourage you from continuing to bond – sometimes a fresh perspective can inspire you to explore new ideas or activities that you’ve never considered before.

A friendly face in the workplace is reassuring and helps you develop a stronger sense of belonging. Having a go-to person inside, and outside, of work can provide a real emotional boost that can help you feel better about each day.

In honor of National Best Friends Day, grab your bestie – or start working on befriending someone new – and make today special!

Kaylin and Elizabeth are office besties inside and outside of Ivie. They have been friends for over 10 years and are celebrating National Best Friends Day the only way they know how: with a working lunch date and together writing this blog.
